((:caput gladiatoris ad sin.))

Description of Drawing (English): head of gladiator facing left
Findspot: Smyrna, Basilica (Agora.1)
Drawing Category: Gladiators
Writing Style: charcoal
  • Graffito Height: 40
  • Graffito Length: 23
Bibliography: Bagnall, R. S. et al., Graffiti from the Basilica in the Agora of Smyrna (2016): 78.
Commentary: The ink is mostly faded. The bust, seen from behind, is drawn in three-quarter, turned to the left. The image can be identified as a large crested gladiatorial helmet and a breastplate that covers also part of the back. The dipinto was probably meant to be a close-up of the gladiator depicted in D1.2.
