Drawing of a gladiator

((:gladiator cum scuto))

Description of Drawing (English): gladiator with shield
Findspot: Smyrna, Basilica (Agora.1)
Drawing Category: Gladiators
Writing Style: charcoal
Bibliography: Bagnall, R. S. et al., Graffiti from the Basilica in the Agora of Smyrna (2016): 143.
Commentary: Dipinto of a gladiator, located in the upper right quadrant of the back wall of Bay 11. The lines are very faded, making the drawing very difficult to read. The figure, in three-quarter, is shown as advancing to the left, with the left leg stretched forward. The head seems to be covered by a brimmed helmet, while the upper part of the body is covered by a large shield that reaches down to the knees only. These two elements suggest that the gladiator might have been a provocator.
